CHERYL SPEAKS: The X Factor, Simon Cowell and the Girls Aloud Split

Geordie girl turned international superstar Cheryl Cole spoke more candidly than ever before about appearing on The X Factor and Girls Aloud’s recent split in an interview with InStyle to mark her approaching¬†30th birthday. “The last X Factor series I did was too hard for me,” she revealed. “I wasn’t right in my mind enough to give it my everything and be focused.” The last X Factor series Cheryl appeared in was the show’s seventh series back in 2010. During the series runs she released her second album and achieved her second UK number one and many wonder if this pulled her focus away from mentoring acts and judging the reality singing show.

Cheryl also admitted to not being mentally strong enough. During the final series she received a number of criticisms and caused outrage when chosing Katie Waissel over Gamu Nhengu despite Katie putting on a poor performance at the judge’s houses. She came under fire again in the fifth week of the live shows by breaking the rules and refusing to vote off an act. Cheryl’s first official autobiography was released whilst the series was airing and brought up fresh heartache over estranged husband, Ashley Cole.

The star confirmed she is back in touch with ‘frenemy’ Simon Cowell. The pair famously fell out after Cheryl was dumped from the judging panel of the US version of The X Factor. The UK series has suffered a ratings loss since Cole left the panel but Cheryl cheekily revealed if she mentioned flagging ratings to Cowell “he’d have a meltdown.”

Cheryl also quashed rumours of there ever being a Girls Aloud reunion saying, “I hope to God I’m not turning up to Girls Aloud jumping around doing all the routines when I’m 45!” She made it clear that her and Nadine still don’t agree on everything by adding that even though Nadine never wanted say out loud that the band had split, Cheryl thought it was misleading to the fans to not say otherwise.

When quizzed about the looming big 3-0 Cheryl compared herself to her 21 year old self and said,¬†“I’m a hell of a lot wiser, a hell of a lot stronger, I’m just happier with me now. It’s weird but I’m not scared of it.”

The full interview can be read in InStyle’s July issue, released on Thursday 6th June.
