How To Look Like: MIC’s Millie Mackintosh

Siobhain Woodhouse gives us a step by step guide to achieving Made In Chelsea’s Millie’s look…

For those of you that know me it will be no surprise that Millie Mackintosh is the style icon in my first “How To Look Like…” feature. I absolutely adore Millie’s simplistic dress sense and effortlessly chic look. She may be ‘Made in Chelsea’ but it doesn’t mean you have to have six figures in your bank account to mimic her style.

Hair

Millie’s locks are healthy looking and full of shine. John Freida‘s colour specific shampoo and conditioner range are perfect for keeping your mane soft and shiny. The Sheer Blonde, Brilliant Brunette and Radiant Red products are specially formulated to make the most of your hair colour – natural or dyed. I would also recommend the brilliance collection from Wella Professional range. This is perfect for making thicker hair more manageable. I was given the collection as a gift by a friend who works in a salon and my hair has never looked so full of life.

Millie is currently sporting an ombre style mop with some gorgeous honey hues. To achieve fabulous colour to rival Millie’s, I would advise L’Oreal Preference Wild Ombres No.2. This colour has received rave reviews and users have been particularly impressed with how well the colour also works on darker hair.

Finally, we move onto the blow dry. Miss Mackintosh has been filmed getting her hair coiffed to perfection in Daniel Galvin Jnr’s salon but you don’t have to have a hairdressing God to blow dry your hair to get a barnet as bouncy as Millie’s. You can achieve this look every time you wash you hair with TRESemme Salon Professional Volume Hair Styler which retails for less than £30…and I would rate these much more than GHDs! As the name gives away, it provides volume for your hair and works even on the limpest locks. Blow dry your hair in sections, curling your hair around the brush and setting the style with the cool setting on the dryer.

Make Up

Mill’s signature look is a sunkissed natural glow. Millie recently became an ambassador for the St. Tropez tanning range however she had previously revealed herself as a fan of the Vita Liberata range (see my review here). Both tanning mousses are fabulous however if you’re lazy like me go for the Vita Liberata mousse (RRP: £37.) Although slightly pricier than your average fake tan, the product lasts for up to eight days – it claims 10 days but I am not yet convinced! The tan is always natural looking no matter how dark you go and is never patchy.

This natural look is easy and cheap to achieve. I would recommend Clinique Even Better Make Up (RRP: £22). This product is not too heavy and great for evening out your skin tone. Apply with a foundation brush starting from the forehead and working down your face in natural light to create an even finish. For perfectly pink cheeks like Macca’s I have found the perfect cream blusher in Tesco! From the budget make up range Vivo, Baked Blush in shade 4 will leave you with pearly, rosy cheeks for just £4.99. Plus, with this product, a little goes a long way, saving you even more! For the lips, I use what I call a life saver product. It’s essential and like the blush, as saviour to your bank balance. I haven’t found a better product than Vaseline Rosy Lips (RRP: £1.99). Not only will this product give you the prettiest pout, it will also keep your lips soft and chap-free. The eyes are all about the eyelashes and Millie often chooses to wear her own false lashes – I advise Belgravia for everyday wear. I can understand false lashes everyday are a chore (and perhaps a bit excessive) so I’ve got the next best thing. Benefit They’re Real mascara (£19.50) does everything a mascara should do. Creates voluminous, lengthy and natural looking lashes.

The main part of this look is the dewy glow. I used to fake it with No 7. Illuminating Serum which has since been discontinued, but there are substitutes on the market. Clinique Up-Lighting Liquid Illuminator (RRP: £20.00) works wonders, as does L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique CC Cream Anti-Dullness (RRP: £9.99). I have recently discovered you can obtain dewy skin without the make up by using Good Things Deep Pore Anti Blemish Cleanser which is an absolute bargain at £4.99. Use this day and night and within a week I’m sure you’ll be able to tell the difference.

For a night time look, Millie often opts for a heavy smokey eye. You can see how to re-create this in her youtube demo with Tanya Burr.

Clothes

Now for the important part! Millie is a often seen in beautifully embellished items and back in December I discovered the wonderfully unique Virgo’s Lounge. Dresses retail at around £80 but considering the detailing and quality of the clothing they are well worth the investment. And it would seem Millie is one of their biggest fans. Items from Virgo’s Lounge feature regularly on her style blog and she will often wear their dresses to the Made in Chelsea end of series shows.

Millie’s is often seen wearing a combination of versatile pieces with a statement item usually involving fur. A fur gilet is a great way to dress up any outfit. I’m a fan of this one here from missguided.com. It’s cream colouring means it will match an array of outfits. Hats are another statement worn by Millie. Partial to fedoras along with castmate Rosie Fortescue, she seems to have sparked a trend as TopShop can’t get enough of them right now and have a whole selection to chose from.

Millie’s mixes her statement piece which timeless and classy clothing. Zara is great for such items. The quality of the clothing is great and often worth more than it’s bargain price. Zara’s shirt section has an array of simple yet stylish tops for you to add to your wardrobe, here is my personal favourite. The simplistic yet cool edge to these items means that these are investments that will remain fashionable for years so are well worth purchasing.

Heels are an essential to Millie’s sophisticated style. A pointed black pair will add a touch of elegance to any outfit – even a simple jeans and t-shirt combo. These black suedette courts from New Look are perfect and only £12.99. This teamed with a Celine style tote bag (I love this one from New Look) rounds off the look and gives it that lady-like edge.
