Hipster brides-to-be rejoiced as Topshop unveiled its first bridal range in collaboration with Richard Nicoll. The collection is cunningly called ‘Tie The Knot’ and is aimed to provide a modern alternative to today’s ‘meringue culture’ (Richard’s own description) at an affordable price (prices range from £75-£350).

For those of you not familiar with Richard, he’s the guy who first introduced the coveted nude patent show to catwalks. Bearing this in mind and the fact that celebrity clients include the likes of Keira Knightley and Kate Bosworth, I expected his designs to be pretty and delicate with a hint of sophistication. However, his collection could not be further from my prediction!

Unfortunately for me the collection is a let down. Whilst Richard cleverly integrates romantic elements into his designs by using blush pink hues, delicate chiffon and exquisite lace but by mixing this with lingerie inspired structures the end result is something that looks a bit, dare I say, trashy for a wedding!

For me, the hemlines are far too short- and I know this collection is trying to make a change from the norm but I believe that on your wedding day you need to retain some elegance and a hemline that does not allow you to bend over does not allow you to do so! Perhaps the most disappointing part of the collection is how similar it is to Nicoll’s SS2012 collection in structure, perhaps showing that maybe the designer isn’t fully focused on the bridal range. Nicoll has already made clear that wedding dresses are not something he is planning on launching.

Richard has perhaps recognised the fact the dresses may not be to everyone’s taste for a wedding and pointed out these dresses are perfect party pieces too. Although I hated it as a wedding dress, I can imagine the sheer maxi dress would look adorable yet edgy if worn to a BBQ this summer! But the £350 price tag would maybe put me off a little…
