Eastenders acrtress Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney on the longstanding BBC soap, took to the stage to sing at the live charity event, choosing the apt ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ originally by Sam Cooke.

The 21 year old actress looked like a Hollywood starlet in an elegant, floor length red dress, romantically waved hair and diamonds to wow the crowd with her hidden voice.

She belted out the classic song backed by a gospel choir and was met with praise by the audience and fans at home via Twitter, with even the host and new Radio 1 breakfast host DJ Nick Grimshaw telling her: “We didn’t know you could sing like that!”Lady scarlet: Shona looked completely different to her onscreen persona of Whitney on EastEnders

Praise for Shona’s performance was in abundance on Twitter, and her co-star Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale on the soap, took to the site to compliment the singer, saying: “Shona McGarty what a voice!!! #CiN”
