If like us you are obsessed with all things fashion related and love a bit of pop sensation Ri-Ri then you will have been tuned into Sky Living’s latest show, Styled to Rock. They are searching for British design talent to become Rihanna’s personal designer.

We caught up with Sally Ellis, the first contestant to be voted out of the competition and designer of up and coming brand SVE.

How did you find the experience?

The whole process from auditions to getting on the show was one big roller coaster, it had its highs, one being meeting Rihanna and it’s lows, little sleep, being under a lot of pressure and your being filmed around the clock. But all in all it was a priceless experience and something I will remember forever.

How do you feel about leaving?

I’m actually devastated. I don’t think I was the right person to go home. I think I’m one of the more skilled in designing and sewing but it was my personal mistake in taking the brief literally. I keep stressing that I’ve never done menswear before so it was a massive challenge for me.

How did you initially get into designing?

Ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to be a designer, I use to draw every night in my bed but as I got older things change your life changes. I Initially went into beauty therapy but realised after few years and a trip to OZ the other side of the world it wasn’t me and my heart is still in design so I applied for university and got in on a fashion design course at Salford uni in Manchester and here I am three years on after graduating with my own business and label trying to make it big in the fashion industry.

Tell us a bit about your brand, SVE?

SVE is a high end ladies fashion label, it consists of one off bespoke pieces from ready to wear to evening dresses, SVE is known for using a monochrome colour palette using one piece of colour with each collection. Elegant, intelligent and simplistic. Sve celebrates the strength and power of women in sleek lines and flattering cuts, detailing and surprise embellishments distract and delight the eye.

How would you sum up SVE’s overall look in 3 words?

Elegant, Simplistic  and Flattering.

Where do you get your inspiration for designs?

Each collection I work on has a new concept each time, my new collection that I will be showing off schedule @ London fashion week on 15th September is based around fictional characters from a very old book, the fashion, the routs of the people and surroundings everything inspires a new piece and look.

How would you describe your own personal style? What does fashion mean to you?

My personal style is very similar to my label, I sew what I love it represents me at the end of the day I’ve got to love as I’ve got to wear it. Fashion is my life without it I have no idea what I’d be doing or what I’d look like, everyday should be a catwalk show because you just don’t no who’s watching you or who you will meet my favourite quote from Chanel is: dress shabbily and they remember the dress, dress impeccable and they remember the woman!

What would have designing for Rihanna meant to you?

It would of been great to dress Rihanna but it just wasn’t meant to be this time but I can assure you give me a few more years and Rihanna will be wearing something from SVE!

Sum up Rihanna’s style?

Sexy, daring and fun!

Why do you think she has become such a style icon in Britain?

She’s young and daring, she wears what most girls want to wear but don’t well they’re starting to more now, she has her own mind and shows it and she’s jus cool as f***!

Which other celebrities would you love to design for?

I would love to design for Victoria Beecham, iv always been a fan and one day I hope she too will be wearing SVE, I just need that lucky break and for someone to notice my label, it’s hard to break into the fashion industry especially the top end of it but fingers crossed it wont be to long now.
