It was one of the most hyped up new musicals of the decade, awash with 90s nostalgia and girl power. But after being universally panned by critics, Viva Forever has been given the chop.

The musical, written by Jennifer Saunders and Produced by Judy Cramer was inspired by the songs of the Spice Girls- one of the most successful girl bands in the world. But this wasn’t enough to save the show, which has been consistently plagued by negative reviews since it opened in December.

Some of the Spice Girls tweeted their disappointment over the shows closing.

Geri Halliwell tweeted: ‘We love u all @vivaforever , @emmabunton @MelanieCmusic @OfficialMelB @victoriabeckham #what a shocka , gutted .x’

Whilst Mel C added that she was: ‘Absolutely devastated our wonderful show is closing. Thank you to our brilliant cast and everybody who made the show so incredible.’

Baby Spice Emma also expressed her dismay, writing: ‘I am totally gutted that our wonderful show @vivaforever is coming to an end. Thank you to all our amazing fans for your constant support!’

A joint statement by all five of the girls read: ‘We want to thank the cast and all the fans for their support, and although Viva Forever won’t continue in the West End we are thrilled that the thousands of people who came to the show had as much fun as we did.’

The show will end on June 29th at a loss of £5 million, and no doubt many Spice fans will be devastated. So if you haven’t seen it yet, you’d best hurry up!
